mommies gone sober

Posted by dana at 4:24 pm on Thursday, August 20th, 2009.

cocktailsGone are the days when mommies reach for their glass of little helper once Oprah comes on? Maybe not, but the horrific Diane Schuler incident from earlier this month did rock the mommy world (and the rest of the country) when her autopsy revealed she was three sheets to the wind before driving the wrong way down a New York-area highway and killing herself, four children and three other people. Diane was a stable and confident mom by many people's accounts, and her substance abuse issues seemed to have gone undetected. Otherwise, she would never have been in a position to take care of those kids that day.

TiMER, counting down your destiny

Posted by dana at 12:11 pm on Friday, August 14th, 2009.

People trying to find true love? Revolutionary biotechnological wrist implants that help you count down to the exact moment when people lay eyes on their soul mates? Moonit just couldn't resist writing about TiMER when we heard that stuff. Although we didn't get the chance to see the movie during Tribeca Film Festival '09, one of our former colleagues told us about it when we were talking to him about Moonit. Unfortunately for the movie's protagonist, her destined "one" hasn't gotten himself hooked in yet and she's robbing the cradle with another guy who's set to meet his true love in just a few months. To top it off, she's verging on 30 (a bit too close to home for some of us). In our experience, technology is quite the double-edged sword for relationships. After all, just look at the drama Facebook stirs. It has the ability to make them easier in certain ways, but more difficult in others.

nyc: not the wasteland of the 21st century

Posted by mason at 12:11 pm on Thursday, August 13th, 2009.

moonit getting the finger on 22nd streetIs NYC the cultural and economic wasteland of the 21st century, as portrayed in the media? If you've ever watched "Gossip Girl," "The Real Housewives of New York City," or "NYC Prep," the answer would be an unequivocal "yes." In the aftermath of the banking crisis and stock market meltdown, the US public has acquired an insatiable desire to vilify New York as "ground zero" for greed. That's why these shows have decided to portray NYC as a soulless, materialistic vortex where the high point of an average New Yorker's day revolves around a spa appointment, followed shortly thereafter by a liquid lunch and a well-deserved trip to Barney's.

Well let us be the voice of reason here. We are a testament to the New York they don't show: the one where young people actually spend their daylight hours hard at work trying to get a company off the ground. And we are not alone; the current economic downturn has given way to an incredible amount of innovation on this side of the country. Silicon Alley is alive and well (and, in our perception, getting better every day).
