D. It Is Destiny

Posted by dana at 10:37 am on Thursday, March 19th, 2009.

We are living at a time when Bollywood is taking the world by storm and Slumdog Millionaire is a runaway hit, overcoming fierce odds to win Best Picture and take home a total of 8 awards at the Oscars. Slumdog Millionaire opens up with Jamal Malik being one question away from winning 20 million rupees.

The showcaster asks "How Did He Do It? "

"A. He cheated; B. He's lucky; C. He's a genius; D. It is destiny."

The movie then takes you through his life where every moment is a clue to the answers, while an incredibly addictive Indian song "Jai Ho" (which literally means "You Are My Destiny") plays throughout the film. And all of us teary-eyed audience members eventually find out that "she" is Jamal's destiny–his childhood friend who grows up to be a breathtakingly beautiful young woman.

Moonit Learns Some Valuable Lessons #SXSW

Posted by dana at 8:39 am on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009.

sxsw passesMoonit's first time ever at SXSW really reinforced our excitement for our offering! We feel stronger than ever about what we're building and how we're building it. And this may seem premature, but we're already thinking about all of the ways that Moonit's compatibility offering can be leveraged by attendees of SXSW looking to develop their professional relationships, build out their start-ups, select vendors and partner with others. We'd love to leverage easily accessible information about attendees and presenters alike before SXSW even starts next year so that we can tweet everyone's ideal business partners and team members and enable SXSWers to use Moonit as they make new contacts throughout the conference.

Our team learned some really valuable lessons from the trade show floor, break-out sessions and the SXSW Accelerator competition:

* Focus on one offering you want to do well for your users to make their lives better
* Clean code and beautiful design can help that offering shine through
* Feedback and reputation systems are integral tools for our Mooniverse
* It's important to be human enough to admit mistakes and learn from that feedback, showing humility and calling out lame guests
* We shouldn't make users have to go to your site for the offering, you need to meet them wherever they are and make that user experience as accessible, easy and fun as possible
* Facebook Connect and Microsoft BizSpark both came out at a really opportune time for us!
* Do everything in your power to avoid VC money for as long as possible; if you absolutely need it, remember that "if you're looking for money, ask for advice and if you're looking for advice, ask for money!"

moonit welcomes match rejects with open arms

In our downtime at SXSW, Moonit met up with some friends at Casino el Camino on 6th Street in Austin, a place that resembles the establishment in "From Dusk Till Dawn" more so than any casino (or camino, for that matter). When we got there, half-expecting everyone to turn into vampires, we met Ed–an Austin native who had attended Moonit's shindig at Roux the night before.  The conversation quickly turned to Ed's dating issues, mainly the fact that he's become a bit obsessed with this one girl he met on Match a little while ago. After some intense teasing from his guy friends, we beat the story out of him:

Moonit's Weird Partay #SXSW

someone just getting mooned at rouxMoonit would like to thank everyone who showed their support by coming out to our little shindig at Roux this past Saturday night during SXSW in Austin! Things got started pretty slowly, but eventually people began to pour in–an eclectic mix of geekchics and locals (pretty easy to tell the two apart) lured by the promise of free moonshots.

It was a great opportunity for us to catch up with all the hard working people at eROI helping to make Moonit a reality… a chance to tell our story to potential early adopters (they seemed excited but not sure how much of those conversations they will remember or retain)… a chance for us to "moon" people with our company stickers in some imaginative and unimaginative places…  Last but not least, a special thanks to Chris @ eROI for kicking up the jams at our party! We found out he can rap on just about anything (Moonit, NYC, um… apartheid, doughnuts, you get the idea).

Check out our pics & clips on our Facebook page whenever you get the chance!  We've already got some cool ideas of how we can co-sponsor a bigger event next year for SXSW, maybe at Pangaea or Pure, and have our friends Romance Fantasy come out to play a set there. We're also thinking of any low-key happy hour event we could do at MoonShine (the name is a bit too good for us to pass up).
