the apocalypse? in 2012? blame the mayans!
This road feels familiar, a long winding road filled with angst and paranoia that consumed more than a few people prior to the Y2K hysteria. In actuality, the Y2K event was about as memorable as a Colin Farrell film- sure, you assumed there would be some sizzle associated with it, but in the end you felt conned, hoodwinked, and gullable.

Is the Mayan-predicted apocalypse more of the same? Unfortunately, they may be on to something. The ancient Mayans were quite accomplished in the fields of mathematics and astronomy, which enabled them to track the movement of the sun and the planets. According to sources, their long count calendar measures 5,126 years, then resets, marking the end of one age and the dawn of another. As such, the current age is scheduled to end on Dec. 21, 2012. This day also happens to be the winter solstice and a time when the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 25,800 years.
So, were the Mayans more prophetic than the insightful group of bureaucrats who predicted a Y2K calamity? Let's hope not, but–just to be safe–I've liquidated my savings account and ordered a Ducati racing bike. This was something I had planned to do whenI was 50 so that I had an ace up my sleeve to deal with the expected mid life crisis. But this whole Mayan 2012 thing is causing me to rethink my strategy. Apparently, I am not the only one… Columbia Pictures is planning to release "2012" this fall, a thriller starring John Cusack as a researcher trying to survive various global catastrophes. Wow, you mean Hollywood might be trying to make a buck off the fear and anxiety that accompanies the end of the world hysteria? We're as shocked as you are. Needless to say, you will be hearing a lot more about this whole 2012 thing. As a result, we here at Moonit want to help in any way we can. My first piece of advice: stay calm, don't see any more Colin Farrell movies (life's too short), maybe take that vacation to Asia to see The Great Wall a few years earlier than you had planned, and stay tuned for more updates on the pending apocalypse. I have got to do a companion piece or two relating how I was able to use my knowledge of the prophesises of the ancient Toltec priest, Quetzecotal, to accurately predict the stock market "Crash of 1987"!. He forecast the coming of the Spaniards ("men with hair on the faces coming in boats with wings") to the Americas and the subsequent calamity the brought to the native peoples..to the exact day!
